PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Parenteral nutrition (PN), which involves the intravenous administration of nutrition, may increase energy delivery to a level that more closely matches a patient’s estimated caloric requirements compared to enteral nutrition. This nutrition strategy is often performed in hospitalized patients at risk of malnutrition, given in-hospital undernutrition is typically associated with worse prognosis. Among critically ill adults on mechanical ventilation, an individually titrated supplemental PN strategy significantly increases energy delivery, including estimated protein requirements, compared with usual care. Errors at each step of the PN use process have been reported in the literature, highlighting the need for standardized processes and improved clinician competence. New approvals for PN amino acid formulations and indirect calorimetry also challenge clinicians’ knowledge in delivering appropriate PN to patients. This symposium will provide tools to assist clinicians in understanding of PN and advancements in related technology to ensure improved patient-centered outcomes.
