Program Overview

The 2019 Hospital and Internal Medicine Forum (HIMF) is an innovative, multi-supported, multifaceted educational initiative designed for hospital-based and internal medicine clinicians (physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and nurses). The program aims to provide important educational updates from leading experts on conditions that are commonly encountered by healthcare clinicians practicing in the hospital and various internal medicine settings. HIMF is the premier regional meeting series for hospital- and internal medicine-based clinicians. It offers an exceptional educational experience delivered by nationally-renowned faculty. Participants will gain essential medical knowledge and be updated on recent advances in patient care, both within hospital medicine and across the broader discipline of internal medicine.

What’s new at HIMF in 2019?

The Hospital Medicine Summit has been rebranded to Hospital and Internal Medicine Forum such that it is more representative of clinicians in hospitals and large health systems and whose practice encompasses both hospital and clinic settings. Learning Labs consisting of interactive patient studies and role-play activities on key topics to provide practical and patient-centered approaches to overcome common obstacles in patient care Meet the Professor. Distinguished faculty will be available during the morning and afternoon breaks to address learners’ questions surrounding controversial issues, recent advances, and new developments in selected topics.

Keynote Session

Discuss the causes of burnout in hospital- and internal medicine-based practice
Describe strategies to overcome burnout
Review strategies designed to address burnout in a team-based healthcare environment

Heart Failure Session

Assess the type, stage, and functional classification of heart failure (HF) in hospitalized patients
Develop a patient-centered, guideline-directed, evidence-based management plan for patients hospitalized with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction
Integrate data on newer agents approved for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction to ensure safe and appropriate administration in patients shortly after an acute episode
Summarize the FDA recall of common heart failure medications and which agents have and have not been recalled
Apply effective transitions of care strategies for the management of patients with HF

Hepatic Encephalopathy Session

Identify symptoms and risk factors of Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE) and approaches to diagnosis that are concordant with current guidelines recommendations
Utilize available clinical and observational data to design effective acute and prophylactic treatment regimens for patients with HE
Implement transitional and long-term care strategies to reduce rehospitalization in patients with HE

COPD Session

Describe an approach to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatment that is consistent with current evidence-based guideline recommendations
Review the efficacy, safety, and utility of available therapies for the long-term management of COPD
Match patients with appropriate COPD medication delivery devices

COPD Learning Lab: Available COPD Delivery Devices Review

Review available drug delivery devices for long-term management of COPD
Identify device attributes and device-specific considerations for patient education and device training

HF Learning Lab: Optimizing Transitions of Care for Patients with Heart Failure

Describe best practices for optimal transition of patients with HF from acute-care to outpatient settings
Develop patient education plans that engage patients and patient family members
Identify appropriate follow-up strategies for patients with HF post-discharge

Diabetes Session

Summarize correlations between macro and microvascular complications of uncontrolled T2DM and hospitalization
Evaluate the risk/benefit profiles of novel T2DM therapies in achieving glycemic control and reducing vascular complications
Employ evidence-based strategies to individualize treatment for diverse patients with T2DM to achieve glycemic control and reduce hospitalizations from vascular complications
